GKTD – Olympics

Cost of Big Sporting Events:-

The World Cup in South Africa will cost between 3.5 and 4 billion dollars. However South Africa are expected to struggle to bring in 3 billion dollars in revenues. FIFA, a non-profit organization, had revenues of over 1 billion dollars in 2009 and a surplus of almost $200m. They have pledged an additional $80 million to the organizers. Still, big a deficit seems likely.

Manchester, Barcelona, Portugal and others, who have hosted these events are left with massive stadiums and facilities that are often underused. This week’s Great kitchen Table Debate video looks at the emotions around the London Olympics. Will tax payers have to foot a deficit and “a herd of white elephant stadiums”?
